DVD REVIEW: Pro Wrestling Superstars SLAM BAM - Episode #1
When Wrestlemag was sent the series of 'Slam Bam' DVD's from Pro Wrestling
Superstars, we were unsure what to expect. Sure, you had plenty of good
names on the cards, as you'll find out by reading our reviews, but outside
of the realms of WWE and ROH, you couldn't help but to suspect that the
production values on a "lower budget" release may harm the product. How
wrong we were! Video quality was excellent throughout the DVD, as was the
commentary on all the matches. Let's take a look at 'Slam Bam' Episode
One...
The DVD begins with our host, Aaron Weiss giving us a preview of what we
will see on this DVD, before heading straight into our opening match -
Xavier v Red - a bout which took place on a USA Pro Wrestling show up in
the North East. A decent match, which saw both hit their trademark spots
and gave the live crowd plenty of high flying action throughout.
From there we head off to Border City Wrestling for a Triple Threat match
for the BCW Championship. Pre-match, Shane Douglas comes to ringside and
cute a promo, which unfortunately isn't the best promo he'll ever cut. The
match begins with all the usual spots and storytelling that you'd associate
with a match of this kind. They hit a nice spot which sees a three way
sleeper countered by all into a three way jawbreaker. Short match, but
pretty decent.
The DVD stays with BCW for a TV Title match between Eric Young and TNA's
Chris Sabin in the match of the DVD, with counter move after counter move,
and plenty of near falls, building up to a very good finish. It's worth
buying the DVD purely for this match.
We take a trip back in time for the final match on the DVD, with the late,
great Andre the Giant and Dick the Bruiser teaming up to take on Ox Baker
and Baron Von Krupp. Krupp attacks Andre during the ring intros but is
easily thrown to the floor at ringside. Andre starts off the match
dominating Ox Baker with a headlock. The Bruiser comes in but is soon
double teamed by Ox and Karl until Andre makes the save. The battle
continues until all four men brawl in the ring...until the TV time limit
expires!! Although the finish makes no sense for this DVD, it was pretty
cool to see. When was the last time you saw a TV time limit draw??!
The DVD ends with"shoot" comments from both Douglas and D'Lo Brown, who
spend time discussing ring psychology (or a lack of it) in today's
industry. Both made some very good points.
Overall, a very enjoyable DVD with two excellent matches, a great match
from the past, and a short but sweet three way match for the BCW title.
